| Free 24/7 On-line server for IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 |
After finding out about the last On-line server of Flaming Cliffs 2 which is a great place for us players of this old flight simulator to join and have fun, I decided to search for a similar server, but this time dedicated to other classic flight simulation game: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.
I belong to several virtual flight groups at Discord, in one of those groups I received an invitation to another group called The SAS IL-2 Server, a group of players mostly focused on IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 that also happens to have a working 24/7 on-line server.
So, I asked them what I would need and how to connect to that server. They happily answer me all my doubts, so I share here that information.
What do you need?
You will need to prepare a specific installation of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 in order to be able to play in the server. The following is the list of all the "parts" needed:
- IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 v.4.12.2: the game's version needed for this server is not the latest version available of the game. You can get this specific version from Steam as long as you have a valid license. As the making of this post, the game's price is 9.99US$.
- Ultrapack 3.4 Cassie Superpack: according to its official forum, this is one of the original "great Packs" of IL2. These are collections of many mods, packed together in a coherent and tested way, with the aim of providing a user with an instant addition of a large number of planes, maps, sounds, and other things, in one package. These packs are usually more geared towards the online player but are usable by offline players too.
- Ultrapack 3.4 "Cassie" Patch 2: One of the many updates the base installation of Ultrapack, this one is available to download from the same official forum page.
- Ultrapack 3.4 Cassie Patch 2 Hotfix: Another set of updates for the main MOD. This one seems to be updated more frequently and it's also available at the official forum. As the making of this post, the latest Hotfix update version is the number 23.

This video was made by one on the people in charge of the server. It describes in detail the installation process of all the software needed in order to successfully connect and play on the SAS IL-2 Server.
How to connect to the SAS IL-2 Server
1. On the upper left side of the game's main screen, click on the MULTIPLAY option:

2. On the following screen, click on the JOIN SERVER option:

3. On the following screen, click on the SEARCH FOR LOCAL SERVERS option and write the SAS IL-2 Server address (sas1946.rocks:21010). The click on JOIN:

If everything goes ok, you will be greeted with the mission's map and description, and you'll be able to enter the online adventure and fly along with other IL-2 enthusiasts.
As a side note, it would be nice to join their Discord server and introduce yourself to the community, so they know who they are playing with.
SAS IL-2 Server gameplay
The following is a gameplay from my first time playing on this server. Yes, I'm really bad at this game since I'm used to fly more modern planes and I'm getting into WWII era airplanes, but at least you're getting the idea of the server's performance.
