Wings Over Vietnam is a combat flight simulator game for PC set during the Vietnam War. It encompasses the years from 1964 to 1973 and offers a historically accurate array of jets and weapons for players to utilize in different mission types.

These missions include MIG-CAP (MiG combat air patrol), strike, air support, Iron Hand, and reconnaissance. The game was created by Third Wire Productions using the Strike Fighters: Project 1 engine.

Here I’m going to show you a step-by-step guide to install this pretty old but still awesome game and make it playable on Windows 10/11.

Software needed

In order to install Wings Over Vietnam in your Windows 10/11 PC you need to have the following list programs:

  1. The installation CD/DVD or .ISO image of Wings Over Vietnam (Buy).
  2. The Wings Over Vietnam official October 2008 patch (Download).
  3. The HDR Mod 1.01A. Available for download at CombatAce or this mirror link, an excellent online community of flight simulation players and modders.
  4. DgVoodoo, a legacy DirectX and Glide graphics card API wrapper/implementation program1 that provides support to run Windows and DOS-based old programs using Glide or DirectX. Available for download here.

Installation process

Before we begin: If you have a Windows 10 PC, this whole process also works for Windows 11 based PCs. Now let’s continue with the install.

Once you have all the required software at hand, we can proceed with the installation of Wings Over Vietnam on your Windows 11 PC. The installation process will be as follows:

1. Insert the Wings Over Vietnam CD/DVD on mount the .ISO image and open the setup file. This is one of those “click Next and then Next” cases until the installation is completed.

Do NOT open the game yet, it still will be unplayable at this point.

2. Open the Wings Over Vietnam official October 2008 patch (WOV_Update_Oct2008b.exe) and complete the installation process, another case of “click Next and then Next”. Just remember to install this patch in the same folder the game was installed.

3. Unzip the HD1.01 mod into a new directory then open the enbseries.ini file using a text editor and find and change the following command line from:

[GLOBAL]

UseEffect=1

to

[GLOBAL]

UseEffect=0

Then save the enbseries.ini file.

4. Copy the modified enbseries.ini and the unzipped d3d9.dll into your game install directory, copy a second copy of the enbseries.ini into your Flight sub-directory of your game install directory (this is very important).

5 Unzip the dgVoodoo file into a different folder and look for a file called DDraw.dll. Then copy this file into the Wings Over Vietnam install directory.

6. Open, play and enjoy Wings Over Vietnam on your Windows 10/11 PC.

How to install Wings Over Vietnam on Video

The following video explains the same installation process of this classic flight simulation game on Windows 10 or Windows 11 computers:

Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector was the last good title, in my opinion, of the once great Jetfighter saga of combat simulation video games, the saga that got me into flight simulators way back in the early nineties.

Published in 2003, the game shows a substantial upgrade in graphics with brilliant colors, realistic (by the time) skies and clouds and weather effects, including fog and rain.

In terms of playability, this is the most “arcade” of the whole saga. Many aspects of the “simulation” commands and procedures were left out, including the take-off and landing from carriers, a very challenging and yet fun feature that made Jetfighter games famous.

But despite its lack of details in the “realistic” department, Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector still can be played as an actual flight simulation game with all the fun and maneuverability that comes with this kind of games.

Even though the game was released about two decades ago, it still can be installed and played in modern PC with the most recent version of Windows after some adjustments here and there.

Software needed

1. The game files: You can use your regular installation CD of the game or an .ISO image. As far as I know, the game could be in the “abandonware” category and the installation files can be downloaded from several website, among those sites are Archive.org and MyAbandonware.com

2. No CD Patch: Once the game is installed, it will ask for the “game CD” to be active in the CD drive, but even with the .ISO file mounted, the game usually won’t work. This patch will fix this issue and can be downloaded from here

Installation process

1. Insert the Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector installation CD in the CD drive or mount cd .ISO image of the game. Then open the Autorun file and press the “Install Game” button that will appear on the screen.

You will now enter the main installation program of the game. This is one of those “click Next and the Next” cases until the installation is done.

DO NOT run the game yet, we now need to install the Patch. Uncompress the No CD Patch .RAR file and look for the Game.exe archive.

3. Now copy the Game.exe file from the No CD Patch and overwrite the one located in the Jetfighter V installation folder. By default, the game is installed in the following folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Global Star Software\Jetfighter V

4. Final step. Right click on the game’s desktop shortcut and select the compatibility tab. Once there, set the Compatibility Mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and select the Run this program as an administrator checkmark.

Jetfighter V multiplayer

Jetfighter V has the multiplayer feature available to use. I have personally tested the multiplayer through LAN option, and it works flawlessly. So, theoretically speaking, Jetfighter V can be played over the Internet if you run the game through a VPN service.

If you want to play this game using its multiplayer feature join The Jetfighter’s Discord Server and get in touch with the community to organize some online air battles and give this game, and other classic titles a new life!

How to install Jetfighter The Adventure (1988) on Windows 10/11

Jetfighter: The Adventure is a combat flight simulator published in 1988 for the PC/MS-DOS platform. This was the beginning of one of THE flight simulation video games that got me into flight simulation back in my early teenage years.

In this post I’m going to describe the process needed to install this very old MS-DOS game on a Windows 11 PC platform.

Software needed

Off course we will need several pieces of software, don’t worry they’re all free in order to install Jetfighter: The Adventure in our PC. Those programs are the following:

1. The game files: This seems to be obvious but still is good to mention. Since this game is, as far as I know, under the abandonware category, it can be found all over the Internet. I personally downloaded it from this link at MEGA.

2. DOSBox: Since the game was released for MSDOS, a now defunct Operative System, we’ll need an MSDOS emulator that will give us the right environment to install and play our MSDOS based games. This is a free and open-source program that you can download from its official website.

Installation process

1. Create a folder called DOS right on the root of your hard drive. This will be the virtual C:\ drive inside the DOSBox’s MS-DOS environment.

2. Enter your newly created DOS folder and create a sub-folder called JF.

3. Extract all the game files into the C:\DOS\JF folder. The ones inside the .RAR file you downloaded from Mega.

4. Install DOSBox. This is a straightforward process. Just execute the installation file you downloaded from the official DOSBox website, and basically click “next” on every step until the program completes the installation.

Configuration before you play

Since Jetfighter The Adventure was release in the eighties and was developed for the hardware available at the time, there are some DOSBox configurations we need to take care of before we play the game for the first time.

1. On your windows desktop click on the start icon, the one that looks like the Windows logo, usually located at the left of the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and look for the DOSBox program folder.

2. Look for the DOSBox programs folder and the look for the DOSBox [version number] Options icon and open it. See the following image for reference:

DOSBox [version number] Options icon

3. Once you click the DOSBox Options icon it will open the main configuration file of the program. Once in the file look the following command line:

cputype=auto

Now edit this line to look as follows:

cputype=386_prefetch

4. Now save all the changes and close the file.

Play Jetfighter The Adventure on Windows

1. Open DOSBox by double clicking on the program’s shortcut located on your main desktop screen.

2. Once you open the program, you will see a screen showing the MSDOS environment. By default, DOSBox will be showing a “Z:\” as the default virtual drive.

DOXBox's main screen
DOXBox’s main screen

3. Now you will have to “Mount” your virtual “C:\” drive first in order to play your games using the following commands:

mount c c:\dos

Once the command is written, just press ENTER. If everything is all right, you’ll see the following message:

Drive C is mounted as local directory c:\dos\ as you can see on the following screen:

DOSBox screen after the "Mount C" command
DOSBox screen after the “Mount C” command

4. Now, in order to play the game, you’ll to run the following commands:

c:\ <ENTER> This command will take you the virtual c:\ drive you mounted earlier.

c:\jf <ENTER> This command will take you into the game’s main folder.

jf or jf.exe <ENTER> This command will open the actual game.

If everything goes all right, you’ll see a screen like this before running the game:

Entering the game's folder on DOSBox
Entering the game’s folder on DOSBox

5. Enjoy playing Jetfighter The Adventure on Windows 11.
